make it: a piece with plain weave and diamond pattern bars
This project will get you familiar with the diamond pattern bar. You’ll make a piece like the one with the zigzag twill, but with a diamond medallion in the middle section instead.
The first and last sections are woven with plain weave. The middle section is woven by using the diamond pattern bar.
Start with the plain weave bar, and weave a few rows of plain weave in the color and yarn of your choice.
Next, remove the plain weave bar and insert the diamond pattern bar. You’ll start the diamond section by rotating the bar backward one position between each row as you weave. When you get about halfway up the piece (how many rows this is depends on how thick your yarn is), rotate it forward between each row, for the rest of the way. That makes the diamond medallion form.
Then remove the diamond bar and insert the plain weave bar, and weave a few more rows of plain weave in the color and yarn of your choice. You can finish according to the finishing choices in the video “Finishing.”
It might be helpful to watch at least the Quick Version getting started video and and the Make It: Zigzag twill project video before starting this one. See what you think. You might find that you like the way the diamond pattern looks if you switch the direction of the bar every few rows, or not at all.
