Who am I? I am not a weaver. I’m an artist and maker that wanted to weave but couldn’t figure it out — I tried different looms but couldn’t get into any creative flow. I had a tiny old darning loom that felt more immediate and straightforward to use. Using that as inspiration I prototyped a small handheld loom with a built-in heddle bar — and promptly wove a little flower.

The next aha moment came when I realized the bar could rotate fully around, each position representing one shaft of a four-shaft loom. Now I had a tool that translated a relatively complex set of linear, step-by-step actions into an endless loop. Patternmaking became fluid and intuitive — no complicated instructions or equipment, no drafts (I still don’t know how to read a weaving draft).

What surprised me was how engaging it was. Far from dumbing down the process, this tool actually plugged me right into the creative part of weaving — bypassing the technical difficulties (and to be honest, the cognitive challenges) I had with traditional looms. I saw how patterns worked, and how I could change them and play with them. It was quick, fun, and full of possibilities.
